David Bailey

David Bailey - Fashion (Studio) Research:

David is perhaps one of the most well known photographers out there. He is probably most known for his Studio portraits of famous people and his continuous work using black and white.
I am a big fan of Bailey's work and always look to his photography for inspiration and as always I find it. His fashion shoots are truly one of a kind and have a unique simple style. Bailey's style has always been simple and effective even in his famous portraits, just plain backgrounds are used and a model. Its the way he takes the photo and how he wants the model to present themselves for the image, its always a very nice portrait and with each model specific features seem to reach out to the viewer and pull you in to realise the story/feelings in the photograph.
Like Bailey, I will be taking studio portraits for fashion (clothing) and I have learnt a lot from Baileys work including things like models positioning, angles of the camera to complement the clothing and model. Lighting - soft and not solid light that it takes away the natural effect thats trying to be communicated across to the viewer. Expressions and stance, all these key essentials that will need to be done in order to create a nice studio portrait without making it look too copy cat-ish. Bailey has great techniques and I will to try some of my own versions in the studio. I always find inspiration in Bailey.

Advertising

Dolce & Gabbana advertisement are never anything short of simple and classy. There is always a story told in each advert the create. I really like the use of simple and classy and it makes for more of a solid finish on images, making them bold and more impacting. Use of black and white is also a nice touch which I may consider using in my images but is not essential.

WWF have shown a truly inventive and creative side to their advertisement linking both humans and animals together through a unique style of paint on body parts. Simple backgrounds create more emphasis on the main piece. This is an unusual style and has made me consider a more playful style to my images in the way of lighting and focusing on certain features.

RANKIN

Rankin's advertisement photography is very unique and bold.
I love the simplicity and style of his Nike advertisement as it is very powerful and straight to the point. It has quite a raw-warrior feel to it making it stand out and show the true pride and meaning inside of the photograph. Also I have enjoyed his studio work on the 'Equinox made me do it' pieces. They have inspired me and helped me see how I want my images to look.

'Nike'
Colours and Boldness. Rankin uses them so well in his advertisement, the ideas are great and really reach out and people can understand there meaning.
I have even taken a liking to Rankin's more unusual yet powerful pieces such as the 'Jitrois' image above. Rankin's work expands over a variety of styles and has helped me see what more I can add to my pieces.
